China Soda Ash Light Market Update: Supply Recovers While Demand Remains Cautious

2026年6月11日 17:00:00

Bulk soda ash storage for industrial buyers

China's soda ash market remained mostly stable with some soft adjustments during June 5-11, 2026. Raw salt prices were broadly steady, coal costs stayed high, and soda ash producers gradually restored operating units. At the same time, downstream demand was still moderate, with buyers mainly replenishing at low prices and avoiding aggressive restocking.

Market Overview

East China light soda ash was reported at RMB 1,150/mt, about USD 169/mt using the working exchange rate of USD 1 = RMB 6.8, unchanged from June 4. East China dense soda ash was around RMB 1,250/mt, about USD 184/mt, also unchanged. In North China, light soda ash stayed around RMB 1,200/mt, about USD 176/mt, while dense soda ash stayed around RMB 1,280/mt, about USD 188/mt.

For overseas buyers, the current China Soda Ash Light market is not showing a sharp price rebound, but low-price negotiation space may narrow if production costs stay firm. Buyers should reconfirm the latest quotation, grade, packing and shipment schedule before placing orders.

Supply and Inventory

Domestic soda ash supply increased during the week as several production units resumed. Total weekly soda ash output reached about 745,500 tons, up 28,200 tons or 3.93% from the previous week. Overall capacity utilization rose to 78.27%, up 2.96 percentage points.

Light soda ash output was about 327,000 tons, slightly lower by 2,500 tons, while dense soda ash output increased to about 418,500 tons, up 30,700 tons. Producer inventory stood at about 1.7121 million tons, down 5,700 tons or 0.33% from the previous week, but still at a high level. Inventory movement was limited because factory shipments were mostly based on existing orders and new order intake was only average.

Demand Conditions

Downstream demand remained cautious. Float glass demand weakened slightly during the period, while photovoltaic glass demand also declined. Float glass consumption of dense soda ash was about 203,200 tons, down 0.34%, and photovoltaic glass demand was about 105,400 tons, down 1.31%.

Float glass market prices continued to soften, with the national average at around RMB 1,116/mt, about USD 164/mt, down 0.98% from the previous week. Photovoltaic glass 2.0 mm prices stayed at RMB 8.5/sqm, about USD 1.25/sqm. These downstream signals show that glass-related demand has not yet provided strong support for soda ash prices.

Costs and Related Markets

Cost support remained firm. The 5,500 kcal thermal coal price rose slightly to RMB 863/mt, about USD 127/mt, while East China well and mine salt stayed around RMB 265/mt, about USD 39/mt. High coal prices continued to pressure soda ash production margins.

Producer profitability remained weak. Co-production soda ash theoretical profit fell sharply to around RMB 3.50/mt, while ammonia-soda theoretical profit was around RMB -61.98/mt. With costs firm and downstream demand weak, soda ash producers had limited room for strong price increases, but also had pressure to avoid deep price cuts.

Buyer Considerations

For international buyers, the current market is suitable for planned procurement rather than speculative buying. Supply is increasing, but prices are already near low levels in many regions and cost support remains visible. Buyers should compare light and dense grade requirements carefully, especially for detergent, chemical processing, glass and industrial applications.

For quotation requests, buyers should confirm grade, purity, bulk density, packing, destination port, shipment window and documentation requirements. Market figures in this article are based on the reported period and should be reconfirmed before any purchase decision.

Short-Term Outlook

The short-term China soda ash market is expected to remain stable with narrow fluctuations. Supply may continue to increase as maintenance losses decline and some units recover. Demand may improve slightly if float glass production lines restart, but overall buying is still expected to remain need-based.

The main factors to watch are producer operating rates, inventory changes, coal cost movement, float glass line restarts, photovoltaic glass demand and export order activity. If supply rises faster than demand, sellers may keep flexible transaction terms. If costs remain high and low-price buying improves, the market may stabilize at the lower end.

FAQ

Why did China soda ash prices stay mostly stable this week?
Prices stayed mostly stable because supply increased but downstream demand remained cautious, while high coal costs continued to support producer offers.

Is China soda ash supply increasing now?
Yes. Weekly output rose to about 745,500 tons and capacity utilization increased to 78.27% as several production units resumed.

Is downstream glass demand strong enough to lift soda ash prices?
Not yet. Float glass and photovoltaic glass demand remained moderate, and buyers mainly purchased for immediate needs.

What should buyers confirm before ordering Soda Ash Light?
Buyers should confirm grade, purity, packing, quantity, destination port, shipment schedule, documentation and the latest price before placing orders.
