China Soda Ash Dense Market Update: Prices Weaken as Inventory Pressure Builds

During July 31-August 6, 2026, China's soda ash market remained under pressure. Some producers stopped or reduced operations for maintenance, so weekly supply moved lower. However, the reduction in supply did not reverse the weak market because downstream demand from glass and other users stayed cautious, and factory inventory continued to rise.

Key Price Signals

By August 6, East China light soda ash was around RMB 970/mt, down RMB 50/mt from July 30, or about USD 143/mt using the working exchange rate of USD 1 = RMB 6.8. East China dense soda ash was around RMB 1,150/mt, down RMB 50/mt, or about USD 169/mt. In North China, light soda ash moved to around RMB 1,050/mt, while dense material was also around RMB 1,150/mt. Northwest prices were more stable at around RMB 830/mt, about USD 122/mt.

Raw material signals were mixed. Thermal coal moved slightly higher to around RMB 839/mt, about USD 123/mt, while salt prices were generally stable. Cost support existed but was not strong enough to offset weak demand and inventory pressure.

Supply, Inventory and Demand

Weekly soda ash output was about 746,400 mt, down around 22,100 mt from the previous week. The overall operating rate fell to about 78.37%, mainly because several plants were under maintenance or load reduction. Light soda ash output was around 338,800 mt, and dense soda ash output was around 407,500 mt.

Despite the lower output, soda ash producers' inventory still increased to about 1.8495 million mt. This is the main reason the market remained weak. New orders were average, some producers reported slower shipment, and downstream users mostly purchased on a just-in-time basis rather than building larger stock.

Glass demand did not provide enough support. Float glass consumption softened slightly, photovoltaic glass operation was broadly stable, and light soda ash downstream demand showed no clear improvement. For overseas buyers, this means the China market currently offers more room for negotiation, but prices should still be checked close to shipment because regional prices and freight conditions can change quickly.

Buyer Considerations for RFQ

If you are comparing China supplier, manufacturer, distributor or exporter options, the key is to specify whether you need dense or light material, the target Na2CO3 specification, packing, quantity, destination port and shipment window. Buyers can review the soda ash dense product page for glass and industrial-use inquiries, or check the light soda ash product page when lower bulk density material is required.

For a practical RFQ, include preferred packing such as 25 kg bags, 40 kg bags, jumbo bags or containerized shipment, plus COA and document requirements. This helps suppliers quote more accurately and avoid delays during export booking.

Short-Term Outlook

The short-term market is likely to stay weak or low-range. Some further maintenance is expected, but downstream demand is still not strong and inventory remains high. Unless glass demand improves or producers reduce supply more aggressively, soda ash prices may continue to fluctuate at relatively low levels.

Overseas buyers with near-term orders may benefit from monitoring the market closely, especially if they need August or early September shipment. Current prices are market references only and should be reconfirmed before contract, payment or shipping decisions.

FAQ

Why did China soda ash prices fall even though supply decreased?

Supply decreased because of maintenance, but downstream demand was weaker and producer inventory continued to rise. Inventory pressure outweighed the supply reduction.

Which grade is more relevant for glass buyers?

Glass producers usually focus on dense soda ash because of its higher bulk density and suitability for glass production. Final grade and specification should still be confirmed by the buyer's formula and plant requirements.

Is light soda ash also under pressure?

Yes. East China light soda ash fell to around RMB 970/mt by August 6, 2026, while several other regions also moved lower. Demand remained mainly just-in-time.

What should overseas buyers include in a soda ash RFQ?

Buyers should provide grade, Na2CO3 specification, packing, order quantity, destination port, shipment schedule, COA requirements and any preferred documentation for customs clearance.

Should buyers wait for lower prices?

The market still looks weak, but regional supply, freight and exchange-rate conditions can change. Buyers with confirmed demand should compare current offers and shipment availability instead of relying only on a general price trend.
