China Soda Ash Market Update: Maintenance Cuts Supply but High Inventory Caps the Upside

China's soda ash market was stable to slightly firm during August 28-September 3, 2026. Large-plant maintenance and operating adjustments reduced weekly supply, while rising coal prices strengthened production costs. However, high producer inventory and weaker demand from float and photovoltaic glass limited the room for a broad price increase.

Key Takeaways for Buyers

East China Soda Ash Light was around RMB 980/mt on September 3, unchanged from August 27, or approximately USD 144/mt using the fixed working exchange rate of USD 1 = RMB 6.8. East China Soda Ash Dense was around RMB 1,150/mt, also unchanged, or approximately USD 169/mt.

These figures are domestic China market references rather than export quotations. Current FOB, CFR or CIF offers must be reconfirmed according to grade, specification, packing, quantity, loading location, destination port, freight and shipment window.

The central market tension is clear: production fell significantly, but demand fell as well and inventory continued to increase. Maintenance supports seller sentiment, while weak downstream consumption restricts the price upside.

Supply Fell During Large-Plant Maintenance

China produced approximately 718,800 mt of soda ash during the week, down 47,400 mt or 6.18% from the previous period. Soda Ash Light output declined to about 340,200 mt, while Soda Ash Dense output fell to about 378,600 mt. The overall industry operating rate decreased from 80.44% to 75.47%.

Several plants reduced operating rates or entered maintenance, including a major production complex whose shutdown had a notable effect on national output. Other units resumed or increased production, but the combined result was a clear weekly supply reduction.

Supply may remain low in the next period. The market report projected weekly output near 679,400 mt and an operating rate around 71.34%, subject to actual maintenance and restart schedules. Buyers should verify current plant status rather than treating a forecast restart as confirmed supply.

High Inventory Still Limits the Market

Producer inventory reached approximately 1.9113 million mt on September 3, up 38,600 mt or 2.06% week on week and 4.90% year on year. Soda Ash Light inventory was about 1.0429 million mt, while Soda Ash Dense inventory was about 868,400 mt.

Although many producers maintained a reasonable balance between output and sales, slow deliveries at some plants allowed total inventory to rise. Social inventory was also reported above 580,000 mt. These stock levels mean that lower production alone may not create a sustained shortage across the market.

Glass Demand Remained the Main Constraint

Heavy soda ash demand weakened as one float-glass line reduced furnace activity and three photovoltaic-glass lines entered cold repair. Float-glass demand was approximately 198,900 mt for the week, while photovoltaic-glass demand was about 97,400 mt. Further photovoltaic-glass line reductions were possible in the following week.

For Soda Ash Dense buyers, the key question is whether plant maintenance can reduce inventory faster than glass demand declines. Light soda ash downstream industries remained relatively stable but continued mainly with just-in-time replenishment rather than aggressive stock building.

Cost Support and Short-Term Outlook

Thermal coal at the 5,500 kcal reference rose to RMB 907/mt, up RMB 39/mt or 4.49% week on week. Raw salt was generally stable to softer by region. Stronger coal costs supported producer sentiment, but soda ash process margins remained weak.

The short-term market is expected to stabilize with narrow adjustments rather than enter a strong rally. East China light soda ash was projected around RMB 980-1,000/mt, approximately USD 144-147/mt. Dense soda ash references require close confirmation because regional delivery terms and plant offers differ. All projected ranges should be treated as market guidance, not a current export quotation.

Specification, Packing and Shipment Considerations

Overseas buyers should first confirm whether Soda Ash Dense or Soda Ash Light is required. Dense material is commonly selected for glass and applications where higher bulk density is preferred, while light material is used in detergents, chemicals and processes requiring lower bulk density or easier dissolution.

A supplier China, manufacturer, distributor or exporter comparison should cover Na2CO3 content, chloride, bulk density where relevant, particle form, packing, COA, MSDS and container loading arrangements. Product selection should follow the buyer's process and agreed specification rather than price alone.

RFQ Checklist

Include the required grade, target specification, application, packing, quantity, destination port, shipment window, COA/MSDS needs and any import-document or labeling requirements. Buyers should also ask whether the proposed cargo is based on prompt stock, scheduled production or a plant restart.

Short FAQ

Why did soda ash prices stay firm when inventory increased?

Large-plant maintenance reduced weekly output and coal costs increased, supporting seller sentiment. High inventory and weak glass demand prevented a stronger price rise.

Which grade is normally used by glass producers?

Glass producers commonly use Soda Ash Dense, but the final selection must follow the production formula, bulk-density requirement and COA.

Will lower production create an immediate shortage?

Not necessarily. Output is lower, but producer and social inventories remain high, and glass demand is still weak. Availability can also differ by region and producer.

Are domestic RMB prices valid export offers?

No. Export quotations must include specification, packing, inland transport, documentation, port costs, freight and the required shipment window.

What should buyers monitor next week?

Key factors are large-plant maintenance, confirmed restart timing, coal costs, producer inventory and changes in float and photovoltaic glass production lines.
